Factory managers are at their most pessimistic in seven-and-a-half years, a poll by Stellenbosch University's Bureau of Economic Research (BER) found. Christelle Grobler, a BER economist, said: "Manufacturing fixed investment contracted for the first time since 2001, signalling caution among manufacturers as interest rates rise and the stimulus of lively demand falls away." - Robert Laing
