Indaba to solve taxi violence

More than 5000 taxi operators will square up for an all important one-day meeting with government leaders in Durban today.

KwaZulu-Natal Taxi Alliance chairman Eugene Hadebe said taxi owners will meet leaders from the national department of Energy and Minerals as well as the provincial transport and community safety department.

"Taxi owners will at the end of the meeting take a resolution on the way forward," Hadebe said.

"We are hoping that the government leaders will come with some answers to our concerns."

He said taxi owners were fed up with the ongoing violence as a result of huge backlogs in permit applications.

There were 17000 taxi operators in the province and those in the key centres were still waiting for their permits, with some having applied in 2000, he said.

"Since the start of this year, 139 taxi owners have been killed in this province alone. The fighting is over routes because the permits have still not been granted to the relevant associations."
