council graft claims
Allegations of embezzlement of municipal funds and nepotism have rocked Greater Makhado Municipality.
The ANC Youth League in Vhembe is now calling for the resignation of municipal manager Faith Muthambi and mayor Gloria Mashaba.
At a meeting between the municipal management and the ANCYL last week, the league threatened to wreak chaos if the manager and mayor did not resign. The league has accused Muthambi and Mashaba of using the municipality to generate money for themselves.
ANCYL secretary Percy Mashimbywe said the two had gone on an expensive trip to China earlier this year without first consulting all stakeholders.
"A sum of R66000 was budgeted for the trip but the expenditure report indicated that more than R1million was used. In less than two months, the same people spent over R30000 on whisky to entertain delegates from Chinan," said Mashimbywe.
Mashimbywe said Muthambi had also influenced the awarding of a tender to tar roads in the Waterval area - a move that was rejected by the municipality.
An investigation allegedly revealed that the company awarded the tender belonged to Muthambi's boyfriend.
According to a document in the possession of Sowetan, Muthambi had increased the R3,7million budget for construction of the proposed road with a further R1,4million.
Muthambi had also allegedly further authorised the payment for the construction of Tshianda Road in Makhado without the authority of the municipality.
A cousin of Muthambi was allegedly appointed the munici- pality's chief finance officer and another its library officer without first being interviewed.
Mashaba could yesterday not be reached for comment.
Municipal spokesman Louise Bobothi confirmed that allegations of nepotism over the appointment of chief finance officer and librarian had been made.
