Four people have been arrested in Giyani for possession of counterfeit money.

The four men, aged between 19 and 27, were arrested while trying to buy liquor at a shebeen on Monday morning.

Police received a tip-off from shebeen owners that a group of men were using counterfeit money to buy liquor.

A trap was set at another shebeen where police said the four men were "caught red-handed" buying liquor with counterfeit money.

About five families in the area have also come forward claiming that the four men had also paid them with fake money.

Mopani police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe yesterday said: "We have confiscated R18500 in counterfeit money from the four men."

The fake money was in R100 notes, he said.

"It will be used as evidence at their appearance before a court of law," Ngoepe said.

The four will appear in the Giyani magistrate's court today.
