Big miners lose ground

Anglo American has dropped from third to fifth place in the ranks of global mining giants.

Anglo's drop goes with the "big four" mining countries Canada, United States, Australia and South Africa losing ground to Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Brazil's Vale is now the world's third biggest mining group measured by market capitalisation, followed by China's Shenhua.

The Top 40 global miners surveyed by PricewaterhouseCoopers saw their revenue grow 32percent last year. However, costs grew faster at 38percent.
