Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka told young parliamentarians that the issues they raised, such as poverty, sex education and violence, were genuine problems.
"I'm impressed with your level of debate," Mlambo-Ngcuka said yesterday at the national youth parliament in the Grace Bible Church, Pimville, Soweto.
"These debates highlight the real issues that confront you as young people and need to be addressed, but we can rely on you for solutions as well."
Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (NMCF) chief executive Sibongile Mkhabela said the objective of the youth parliament was to foster leadership and excellence.
The children's parliaments are part of the annual chilren's celebrations hosted by the NMCF.
The national youth parliament was convened for the first time this year.
The Gauteng youth parliament sat for the first time in May and other provinces sat as well.
On July 9 the youth will meet to convene the regional youth parliament at which other youths from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region will be invited in preparation for Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday next month.
