A R1,3 million library in honour of the late Hector Pieterson was launched yesterday in Dobsonville, Soweto, 32 years after he was killed.

Pieterson, then 13, was one of the first students shot dead during the 1976 uprising against being taught in Afrikaans when police opened fire on the pupils.

The library has a hall that seats 50 pupils, a reading room for 40 intermediary pupils, a computer and research centre and an outdoor auditorium.

Hector Pieterson Primary School principal Alex Ramokhoase said: "The library will be a full service institution not only for the pupils but for teachers too."

Tebogo Penane, a Grade 7 pupil at the school, said: "We are grateful we now have a library."

Gauteng education MEC Angie Motshekga and Antoinette Sithole- Pieterson attended the opening.
