Limpopo athletes outpaced their visiting counterparts during the yearly Inter-provincial Metropolitan Winter Games at the University of Limpopo on Friday.

The week-long tournament was played by intellectually impaired learners from Free State, Limpopo, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

Limpopo won three of the five gold medals on display on the day, with Mpumalanga and Gauteng sharing the other two.

Mpumalanga were made to sweat before they beat the stubborn Limpopo 7-6 in the basketball final, with Gauteng claiming third position.

Limpopo collected both gold medals in the junior and senior football categories. In the junior event they pipped Mpumalanga 6-5 and went on to narrowly beat Gauteng 5-4 in the senior category, also through penalties.

Gauteng then beat Limpopo 9-7 in the junior netball category to take home gold.

Limpopo had sweet revenge when they walloped Gauteng 7-3 in the finals of netball's seniors category.

"We are impressed by the high standard displayed by all the players and hope that they will represent the country exceptionally at the international tournament later this year," Lizzy Vogel, president of the Intellectually Impaired Sports, said yesterday.
