The future looks bright for 10 chiefs who completed a typing course and basic computer literacy in Limpopo's Greater Letaba Municipality.
They were among 45 beneficiaries of a skills development programme initiated to improve the lives of municipal workers.
The training was funded by the municipality at a cost of more than R300000.
About 167 participants received certificates at a ceremony held at the municipal offices in Modjadjiskloof at the weekend.
They include administrative personnel who were trained in customer care, basic skills in building, plumbing and first aid. Some of them received national certificates in local economic development.
Seventy-one illiterate municipal workers received adult basic education level 1 and 2.
Municipal mayor Joshua Matlou said the municipality decided to train traditional leaders to enable them to cope with modern-day technology.
"It will help them compile information about their communities electronically, without problems like before," he said.
Matlou added that the municipality had allocated a further R450000 to further finance skills development for its workers in the coming financial year.
He said that among those who would be trained were councillors. But he warned that councilors who produced poor results would have to pay back the money to the municipality.
Representative for the Modjadji regent, Joseph Modjadji, said the training would help chiefs who would not have to rely on secretaries for information. Chiefs would now record statistics of communities themselves.
