Police at Etwatwa in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, are searching for a young mother who allegedly dumped her dead son at Daveyton Clinic and disappeared without trace on the morning of April 27.
Constable Mabote Motopi yesterday identified the woman as Maria Mashiane, pictured, of Emaphupheni. Her age is unknown.
Motopi said the woman apparently decided to take her two-year-old son, Happy Nathi Mashiane, to a doctor after claiming the child had spent the whole night vomiting .
"Our investigations have shown that Mashiane had arrived at Daveyton Clinic at about 9am on the morning of April 27 and informed nurses that her child was very sick.
"She was then referred to a doctor, who on examining the boy was shocked to discover that the child had been dead for almost three hours. Further examination revealed that the child had some burn wounds," said Motopi.
"After she was informed about the doctor's suspicions and the visible burn wounds on his body, Mashiane disappeared from the clinic and has not been seen or heard of since."
Sowetan has also been reliably informed that when Mashiane entered the clinic carrying the child, she was "engulfed" by a bad smell.
When approached by police, Mashiane's mother, Jessica Sibiya, had confirmed that the child was sick, but could not say what was wrong with her grandson except that she had personally instructed her daughter to take him to the clinic the next day without fail.
"She was equally shocked to hear that Happy had been long dead even before he was examined by a doctor at the clinic," Motopi said.
Happy was buried on May 22 in his mother's absence.
In a bid to trace Mashiane, the investigating officer, Inspector Malefetsane Mokhatla, and members of her family have even travelled to Tembisa but could not find her.
