Vus'umuzi "Marvellous" Malinga has given South Africa's hope of having a world boxing champion in one of the respected organisations fresh impetus.

This at a time when South Africa is littered with champions holding Mickey Mouse world titles belonging to fly-by-night bodies.

The gutsy, talented boxer yesterday pummelled World Boxing Council bantamweight title hopeful, Thailand's Veeraphol Nakhonluang, in his Bangkok backyard before winning on a fourth-round TKO.

The feat by the marvelous one has now firmly established him as the main challenger for the title held by Japanese Hozumi Hasegawa.

We salute the younger Malinga for his gallant efforts in Thailand.
