Who will tame the fairways at Pecanwood?

The fifth player to qualify for the regional final of the Duke of Edinburgh Cup will be decided this morning at the Pecanwood Golf Estate in Johannesburg. He will join the four who have already qualified in the final shootout at the same venue in the afternoon.

Vanessa Naude, public relations officer of tournament organiser Tsogo Sun Gaming Properties, said the four were Derrick Schoeman (Hemingways, East London), Angelo Sebastian (Emnotweni, Nelspruit), Justin van Dyk (The Ridge, Witbank) and Shashi Marajh (Sun Coast Casino, Durban).

The event teed off in April at different venues around the country.

It ends at Pecanwood today where the overall winner will be flown to the United Kingdom, along with other finalists around the world, to play in the Individual World Final.

Noeleen Bruton, director of marketing for Tsogo Sun Gaming Properties, said: "South Africa has the honour of being the overall winner of the global Duke of Edinburgh Cup in 2007, a position we'll be defending on three of the most spectacular golf courses in the world in October."

l Martin Pinto, one of the longest-serving directors of the South African Golf Development Board, has retired from his position.

Pinto, who was the first president of the South African Golf Association, called it quits last month.

He joined the SAGDB in 2000, and was also a member of the National Olympic Committee of South Africa.

He started the Golf Development Trust in 1990, 10 years before a single national development body, the SAGDB, was formed in 2000.
