The story of the Fiat 500 begins in Italy in 1957 and was told in the form of a musical play in the Montecasino, Johannesburg, this weekend.

It is the story of the funky little Italian car that is no different from its great-grandmother but looks the part to be in this era.

Sitting in the theatre I couldn't help but ask myself how the Fiat 500 would be received by the market.

Small as it is, it is cute and cheeky. This is the car the Fiat Auto South Africa needs to boost their shaking sales. If priced well, there is not reason why the little Italian won't do well.

The theatre was packed to capacity when the 500 was unveiled. Craig Urbani, as the suave Italian Antonio, took complete command of the stage.

His ability to switch from comedian to dancer to singer was impressive. When he serenaded the old Cinquecento with Time to say Goodbye, there were a good few moist eyes in the audience.

Aubrey Poo's crooning rendition of Marvin Gaye's Let's get it on was nothing short of masterful. And who would have thought that tiny Taryn Sudder, one of the 500 Sirens, could so powerfully belt out the Queen hit Somebody to love?

The car looks modern now but has taken a lot from the original 500 .

According to Fiat Auto SA the new 500 is the most up-to-date solution for the motorist who, needs it for day-to-day use.
