So Allan Knott-Craig, Vodacom's chief executive, intends to retire by September after leading the company since its inception 15 years ago.

He tells us he will spend more of his time pursuing his hobby of photography.

Bully for you, Alan. Photography is a contemplative pursuit and we hope you have plenty of time in retirement to think of things unrelated to the hurly-burly profit-at-allcosts corporate environment.

One topic you might consider is the social cost of your unseemly prices for cellphone service in South Africa - among the most expensive in the world.

You retire on a high after leading Vodacom to the dominant position in the local cellphone market and earning your company 23percent higher profits this year than last with an income of R7,81billion in the year to march.

That is almost R8billion, billion with a "b", enough to fund free education for almost all of your poor clients' kids, feed their starving bodies or pay for an Aids programme or two that would save many thousands of lives.

But business has different imperatives, we know, and the loot will be poured into the coffers of the company's shareholders, our own inept fixed-line operator Telkom and the British multinational Vodafone.

Does make one think just a teeny bit, doesn't it Allan?
