When Isaac Vharomu heard about a training course for taxi drivers like him, he thought that was a waste of time because he would lose his daily takings.

But the 33-year-old Vharomu, pictured, decided to enroll for the two-week taxi driver training course, much to his delight.

Yesterday he received a national certificate in Professional Driving from trainers Phephani Learnerships in conjunction with the Transport Education Training Authority (Teta).

About 100 drivers from in and around the West Rand completed the course and were awarded certificates at Chamdor, Krugersdorp.

They included women drivers.

"We were taught how to drive safely, good customer care and keeping one's vehicle clean.

"I never thought I would enjoy learning road signs all over again," said Vharomu.

Teta chief executive Maphefo Matlala said the drivers could use the certificates to get employment anywhere in the transport industry.
