A schoolgirl dreamt of two corpses on Tuesday and two days later she and her uncle were dead.
S'mangele Mangxola, 16, of Orlando West, Soweto, was stabbed and killed in open veld yesterday over her friend's cellphone while she was walking with a friend from Orlando High School .
"She told us on Wednesday morning that she had dreamt of two dead bodies but did not say whose bodies were they," her sister, Thulisile Simelane, said.
S'mangele's grandfather, Samuel Msimango, said it seemed as if a dark cloud was hovering over his family.
He said that on Wednesday his brother-in-law, Agrippa Thabethe, had died in his hands after a short illness.
"I do not know what is happening to my family," he said.
"As we speak my wife is in KwaMashu to bury her sister's granddaughter.
"Now I do not know how to tell her that her granddaughter is dead too," he said.
S'mangele's cousin, Lerato Msimango, said: "She was a kind person who stood her ground.
"We were watching Khumbul'ekhaya [a TV programme] on Wednesday when she told us that she would not allow her relatives or friends to be robbed or beaten in front of her.
"I think she resisted."
Mangxola was stabbed under the rib cage and was dead on arrival at the local clinic, but residents said they had heard her screams and chased the thugs.
One of the residents said: "I couldn't catch the attackers because my main worry was the welfare of the girls."
Television actor and neighbour Duma Mnembe said he was hurt that a little girl's life was wasted by down-and-out thugs.
"Why didn't they just scare her? She was just a young girl and there was no need to kill her," he said.
Police spokesman Nomvula Mbense said: "Her friend is receiving counselling. She is traumatised. She said she saw S'mangele rolling down the hill after being stabbed."
Mbense said it seemed as if thugs were targeting school children in Orlando.
"Last week, we arrested three guys who stole a pupil's cellphone at gunpoint. Parents must advise their children to travel in groups and not to walk in the veld."
