Fears have been expressed about the increase in the number pieces of luggage that go missing or stolen at various airports while in the care of South African Airways.
This is after figures released by Minister of Public Enterprises Alec Erwin showed that about 37000 passengers flying on SAA could be affected by theft of luggage this year alone.
Erwin's report indicates that between December last year and February, the number of reported cases relating to baggage pilferage and theft was 1498, while items that disappeared stood at 7876.
The statistics, which Erwin gave to the DA, differed significantly from those of SAA - which reported last April that about 6600 of its passengers would have their luggage stolen in a given year.
"If this trend continues unchecked, the implication is that around 37000 SAA passengers will be affected by theft, pilferage or lost baggage this year," said DA MP and public enterprises spokesman Manie van Dyk.
