Steve Kgame, 80, the former mayor of Dobsonville in Soweto, has died.

Kgame, who was diagnosed with prostrate cancer, died in hospital yesterday morning.

His life was always surrounded by controversy in the 1980's. He survived several assasinations during this time.

In 1987, Kgame, who worked for the local government then, was shot in the head and chest while in his shop in Soweto. The incident was the second attack in two years.

Kgame's son, Peter Kgame, said the family was busy with funeral arrangements. - Sowetan Reporter
