Cosatu threat to act over Eishkom

Trade union federations Cosatu and the Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) yesterday said they may strike over the electricity crisis.

Trade union federations Cosatu and the Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) yesterday said they may strike over the electricity crisis.

In a statement, Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven said the National Economic Development and Labour Council had earlier yesterday considered the application under section 77 of the Labour Relations Act.

The section pertains to protest action to promote or defend the socio-economic interests of workers.

"The meeting deemed the issue a matter that had to be considered, but reached a deadlock over the . danger of job losses arising from load-shedding by Eskom and retrenchments by employers as a result of Eskom tariff increases," Craven said.

He said Cosatu would meet today to consider what forms of mass action it would be taking against which organisations. - Sapa
