In his early days, John "Ace" Zulu played soccer for the then Western Rangers Football Club in "Black Rock", Saulsville, one of the leading first division sides affiliated to the Pretoria Bantu Football Association in Atteridgeville.

Zulu, who was born at the then New Claire in Bantule, Pretoria, died last Sunday at his home in Birchleigh, Kempton Park, after a long illness.

Apart from his soccer skill, he was also a playwright of note. He penned a play that earned him a scholarship to the UK to study drama and theatre. He then worked at the SABC as a producer.

After leaving the SABC, he joined Edgars Group as a manager, where he worked for a long time.

He later joined the JD Group as a manager and worked there until he retired due to ill-health.

Zulu is survived by his wife Esther and three children. He will be buried at the Atteridgeville Old Cemetery tomorrow. The service, at Molambo Hall, starts at 7am.
