Speedsters need fines that hurt

On the eve of the biggest petrol price hike ever, a man is caught driving 272km/h. He is arrested and fined R1500. That is part of the problem.

Anyone driving more than 120km/h in today's economy is clearly foolish or rich. I bet he's probably rich, although I would define him as a fool too and R1500 is chicken feed for someone who paid hundreds of thousands for a car.

I'd like to see the driver's licence suspended, his car confiscated and auctioned off and a hefty fine imposed.

Car accidents cost Gauteng about R200000 a day because of lost productivity, clean-up and hospital care. Anyone caught doing 272km/h should pay a fine that hurts, not a slap on the wrist, but something he will remember every time he gets behind the wheel.
