Unrest has returned to Khutsong on the West Rand, but this time it is not politically motivated.
Since Monday last week, learning at Badirile High School has been disrupted after the North West department of education demoted a Grade 12 pupil who had failed Grade 11 last year.
"The department received complaints from the public about a pupil who was a taxi driver last year but has now passed Grade 11," said North West education spokesman Charles Raseala.
"We employed independent markers to re-mark his answer sheets together with those of 20 others. He had been passed by mistake while the rest had failed."
The authorities then asked the failed pupils to return to their original classes because they could not sit for Grade 12 examinations.
A teacher said the pupils were being punished for their active opposition to Khutsong becoming part of North West.
"The boy in question passed but as he was active in the Demarcation Forum, the government wants him punished," said the teacher.
The disruption has spread to other schools in Khutsong.
