KwaZulu-Natal has embarked on a programme to promote a collective action for community safety ahead of the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup.

They are recruiting and training crime prevention volunteers, who are expected to play a significant role during the competitions.

The programme is an initiative of the department of community safety and liaison, which is led by MEC Bheki Cele.

In the project, known as the Volunteer Social Crime Prevention Project, the department plans to recruit 2 100 volunteers by 2010. They have started the process by identifying 1 200 people who will work closely with the law enforcement agencies.

The identified people are trained by experts. Once they have completed the training, the volunteers will be deployed in all the municipalities in the province.
