Toilet baby shocks mom

A 20-year-old student rushed to a hospital toilet to relieve herself but when her water broke she was surprised to find herself giving birth to a baby boy instead.

"I did not suspect something like this would happen while I was in the loo," the Capricorn College student told Sowetan.

The bouncing baby boy, who weighed 2,6kg at birth, has been aptly named Mosa - a Sepedi name meaning mercy.

"We are a Christian family who believes that everything happens through the mercy of God," the baby's granny said.

The amazing incident happened last week when the student, from Semaneng village in GaMatlala, was at the Seshego Hospital in Limpopo.

At the time of the incident the student, who declined to give her name, had felt the call of nature, unaware that her water was going to break.

She said she began feeling labour pains as soon as she entered the toilet .

"I started screaming for help the moment I realised that the baby was coming because it was my first experience of having a baby," she said.

Nurses at the hospital acted swiftly and ran to help the young mother.

"I feel relieved that the baby is okay," she said.

"May 28 will remain in my mind as the day I saw a miracle."

Provincial department of health and social development spokesman Phuti Seloba said yesterday the hospital would continue monitoring the baby's progress until they were satisfied with the state of his health.
