Stofile gets low score

Hard to please boxing promoter Mxolisi Gumede yesterday welcomed the new board of Boxing SA.

But Gumede, who speaks his mind openly when dissatisfied, is totally against the manner in which the new regime was ushered in, and he is pointing fingers at Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile who did the honours last week.

"He flagrantly disregarded the boxing act when appointing the new board. I expected him to respect the act of parliament by consulting with associations before making appointments. One is left perplexed by the whole thing," he said yesterday.

Gumede, the former SA lightweight champion, serves as the deputy chairman of the Gauteng Promoters Association (GPA). But he explained that he was not talking on behalf of GPA.

"The association has not said anything. In fact, we have a meeting with all stakeholders this Sunday to discuss general matters that affect boxing."

The old order, which was led by Dali Mpofu bid bon voyage last Saturday.

Here is the new board:

Peter Ngatane (chairman) from Gauteng, Sakhiwo Sodo and Mxolisi Tsika (both from Eastern Cape), Vulani Joyce Baloyi (Limpopo) and Claude Bassuday (KwaZulu-Natal). Archie Jonas (Free State) is missing in action.
