The mother of the teenager, who cannot legally be named, told a social worker that she was ashamed of her son "because he was not brought up like that".
This emerged during the testimony of social worker Patricia Mhlongo, who was testifying prior to Judge Kate Pillay handing the teenager a 17-year sentence.
Jessica Foord, who has allowed herself to be identified, was gang raped by four men, including the 17-year-old, while her father Tim was tied and bound to a tree and forced to watch.
He and his daughter had taken their dogs for a walk at a dam near Durban's Shongweni area.
The other three men accused of taking part in the rape have been denied bail and were expected to appear in court later this month. A fifth man, who did not rape Foord, faced charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
During her testimony, social worker Mhlongo said she had interviewed the teenager, but he did not seem to understand the seriousness of his crime.
"There was no remorse," she said.
"When I asked him about the pain he had caused the Foord family, he said he never thought about it.
"He didn't seem to understand how serious this was," Mhlongo said.
"When I asked him another question. he told me he wanted to get out of jail because it was not nice."
Also testifying yesterday, Foord said she had to leave her job after the rape because she was "too traumatised" and could not cope.
She also revealed that she and her boyfriend had split up.
"I am also scared of going on any family outings now," she said.
Foord said she was forced to take antiretroviral medication after being raped, which caused her nausea and vomiting.
In passing sentence, Judge Pillay said the youngster, by his own admission, had initiated the crime.
She described the attack "as pure viciousness to not only gang rape the complainant but to do so in the presence of her helpless father".
Commending Foord and her testimony, the judge said: "She's a brave young woman who was prepared to disclose her identity so that the enormity of what happened to her could be brought to the fore."
The teenager's sentence of 17 years imprisonment included eight years at a juvenile rehabilitation facility.
He was also sentenced to a 10-year suspended sentence for robbery.
