A 22-year-old woman who abandoned her newborn baby girl on a tombstone in the cemetery of her village has been charged with murder.

Mmabatho police said the woman from Lorwaneng village, outside Mafikeng in the North West, was arrested three days after she allegedly dumped her baby at the graveyard.

Police spokesman Sabata Mokgwabone said the woman was taken to the local police station by two women who lived with her after they suspected that she had concealed giving birth.

One of the women told police the woman was still pregnant when they left her last Thursday, he said.

They were surprised on their return the following day to find that she had given birth but the baby was nowhere to be seen.

"When questioned, she told the women she had given birth at Mafikeng provincial Hospital," Mokgwabone said.

"She claimed that nurses who helped her to deliver told her that the child had passed away.

"Later she admitted that she gave birth by herself. She said she wrapped the baby up in clothes and left her at a place she was not prepared to disclose.

"She repeated the story to the police. But on Sunday she cracked and led police to the graveyard where the baby girl was found dead."
