Planned legislation to speed land reform is really a veiled plot to seize and redistribute wealth, Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille said yesterday.

Zille told a news conference that the Expropriations Bill - due to be approved by Parliament on June 27 - "renders every form of ownership vulnerable ... money, shares, cars, fixed property, everything".

"It has little to do with land reform ... It has something to do with the state being able to redistribute people's possessions when and how they see fit," she said.

Zille said the bill, initiated by Public Works Minister Thoko Didiza, was an attack on property rights that would lead to investor flight and economic decline.

"The result will be the mass redistribution of poverty," she said. "It could have devastating consequences on the economy."
