An off-duty police constable. Shaun Fourie, has been applauded for his bravery and dedication to his work after he nabbed four suspects involved in housebreaking in Ladysmith, northern KwaZulu-Natal, at the weekend.
It's said that an employer went to her home in Bungalow Road to pay her domestic worker and literally walked into the house while the break-in was in progress.
The burglars had gained entry into the house by holding the domestic up with a knife.
Police spokesman Charmain Struwig said the houseowner was also threatened with a knife by a man who also took her handbag containing cash and a cellphone before fleeing on foot.
"An off-duty policeman from Ladysmith crime prevention was passing at the very moment and saw the fleeing men," Struwig said.
"He gave chase and arrested one of the suspects a short distance from the house.
He enlisted the assistance of the community to keep the suspect in custody while he ran after a second man, whom he arrested after the man tried to hide."
Struwig said residents alerted the police and within minutes they joined Fourie to trace another two suspects to vacant premises nearby and arrested them. "Three cellphones, cash and a knife were recovered from the suspects," Struwig said. "The suspects have been charges for housebreaking and are expected to appear in court soon."
Meanwhile, police arrested two men who were transporting dagga to Durban.
The cops were patrolling on the N3 and spotted a suspicious vehicle near the Tugela Toll Plaza on Friday morning.
Struwig said the policemen stopped the vehicle and discovered 17 bags of dagga weighing a about 284 kilograms. The men were summarily arrested for dealing in dagga.
The same team spotted another suspicious looking vehicle on the N11 and discovered a large bag of dagga weighing approximately 12,7kilograms.
The four occupants of the vehicle were arrested and will face charges of dealing in dagga.
