Three men, one of them a 35-year-old teacher, will appear in court today for the killing of IFP councillor Petros Nxele.

Three other suspects, who are believed to be close relatives of an unnamed councillor in Dundee, are still at large.

The teacher was arrested on Friday at his school in Ekuvukeni in Dundee.

Two other suspects were also arrested on Friday and are expected to appear with him.

After the teacher's arrest the police received a tip-off about the three men who had allegedly been at the scene of the crime.

The police followed the three suspects, who were travelling in a car in Ekuvukeni, and arrested two. A third fled into the bush.

Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge said the teacher was one of the main suspects linked to the killing of the 71-year-old councillor.

"We cannot reveal how the suspects is linked to the murder because the matter is sub judice."

Nxele was gunned down at his home earlier this month. He was shot four times in the chest and died on the scene.

Three men were seen fleeing the scene after the shooting.

Nothing was apparently taken from Nxele. His killers left behind his wallet and a can of cold drink on the roof of the car.

Shortly after his death police offered a R50000 reward to anyone who could assist them in the investigation.

Mdunge said the teacher and his two accomplices would appear in the Dundee magistrate's court today on charges of murder.

It was reported that Nxele had, at a recent IFP party meeting, listed the names of people implicated in corruption in the municipality.

He had allegedly raised the issue of a R50000 municipal grant for local cooperatives that allegedly disappeared last year.
