Residents of the impoverished KwaMgaye-Sawoti village on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast have praised the judiciary for giving harsh sentences to two men for murder.
Buyani Ngcobo, 45, was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to life imprisonment for killing Sikhushu Myeza, 57.
Ngcobo murder his neighbour [Myeza] in December 2006 after a heated argument over the land he wanted for farming.
He had drawn out a knife and stabbed the woman to death in front of her son, Musa Cele, 31.
Ngcobo then removed her body in a wheelbarrow and dropped her over a cliff.
Cele fled to safety while Ngcobo and a group of men searched in vain for him, clearly with the intention of also killing and silence him.
Myeza's body was found by the SAPS search and rescue dog unit in an advanced state of decomposition and airlifted from dense bush at the bottom of a cliff.
Meanwhile, another man, Zitike Mazubane, 26, was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend Ncinci Shezi, 16.
Shezi had visited Mazubane in September 2006 and decided to sleep over but in the early hours Mazubane repeatedly stabbed her and she died.
Mazubane's mother informed the police after he had fled the murder scene.
An ecstatic Themba Dlamini said residents of KwaMgayeSawoti were happy that the two men had been jailed.
"This will send a clear message to all people who have turned our area into an evil place," Dlamini said.
"The police arrested these criminals in no time.
"I was pleased to know that just a year after they murdered the young girl and the middle-aged woman the murderers will go to jail.
"I was horrified by the murders."
