A nine-year-old Grade 2 pupil burnt to death in the family shack while his mother was allegedly drinking in a nearby shebeen.

Thabo Katlego Mthimunye of Phola Park, KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, died in a fire that gutted the shack yesterday morning, according to the police.

A pupil at Siboniwe Primary School at KwaMhlanga, the boy was asleep when the fire broke out.

Police spokesman Captain Mumsy Cibe said the cause of the inferno was unknown.

Cibe said the boy's mother, Sibongile Mthimunye, 28, left home at about 8pm with the deceased locked up in the shack.

"The fire was spotted by neighbours," Cibe said.

"They woke the boy's grandmother who was sleeping in the main house.

The neighbours and granny, Lettie Mthimunye, 80, brought the fire under control, but the boy was already dead."

Cibe said Thabo's charred body was found in a kneeling position.

The grandmother sustained serious burns to her arms.

This was when she smashed the window panes to try and get her grandson out of the burning shack.

She was admitted to the KwaMhlanga hospital for treatment.
