KwaZulu-Natal MECs will rally the North Coast community today to sign a pledge that they will act against xenophobia.
The pledge will be made in iLembe district, where a R290 million developmental project will also be announced.
The initiative is part of a campaign to educate the communities about the lunacy of xenophobia, which has besmirched the good name of South Africa.
The communities will be encouraged to act against xenophobia and pay respect to victims of the attacks.
The district is strategically located on the eThekwini-uMhlatuze corridor, which has been identified as one of the primary economic corridors in the province, with specific potential for further development in agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and the services sectors.
It is also recognised that in order to strengthen the link between eThekwini (Durban) and Umhlathuze (Richards Bay), it is critical to ensure that there is a strong node developed between the two centres.
The project will also benefit the community of rural iNdwedwe and KwaMaphumulo areas who are linked directly with the potential of this coastal corridor to ensure the sharing of economic growth.
The development of King Shaka International Airport and the Dube Trade Port are two further developments that substantially increase the potential for economic development in all the municipalities in the district.
The projects will bring about economic growth and contribute towards job creation.
Ministers who will take part in the event include MEC for finance and economic development Zweli Mkhize, MEC for local government, housing and traditional affairs Mike Mabuyakhulu, MEC for transport, safety and community liaison Bheki Cele, MEC for arts, culture and tourism Weziwe Thusi, MEC for public works Lydia Johnson and MEC for agriculture and environmental affairs Mtholephi Mthimkhulu.
Mabuyakhulu this week appealed to the mayors of all municipalities in the province to play a vital role in ensuring that the xenophobia is rooted out.
