The reigning Miss Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) at the Nelspruit campus, Mpumalanga, was stabbed with a pair of scissors by a fellow student who accused her of sleeping with her boyfriend.

This followed an argument that turned physical between the two on the university premises at last Friday. The alleged fight took place shortly after the two students had just finished writing a test.

It is alleged that Zanie Nkosi, who was crowned Miss TUT Nelspruit last October, was stabbed after the attacker claimed to have seen SMSes from Nkosi to her boyfriend's cellphone. "We had just finished writing when she approached me and demanded to know why I have been sending SMSes to her boyfriend," Nkosi said yesterday.

"I tried to ignore her but she grabbed me by my hair and stabbed me with a pair of scissors."

However, Nkosi conceded that she did send the man a "please call me" in response to several missed calls from his phone.

She believes the situation could have become worse had university security not intervened.

Nkosi was taken to a local medi-clinic for treatment and was discharged the same day.

The alleged attacker, Dimakatso Mogale, could not be reached for comment. She appeared in the Nelspruit magistrate's court on Monday on charges of assault and was released on warning.

University spokesman Vella de Ryter said: "An internal disciplinary hearing would be undertaken against the suspect soon."
