The powerful eThekwini region of the ANC will hold its general congress, where new leaders are expected to be elected, this weekend.

ANC president Jacob Zuma will deliver the address.

ANC regional spokesman James Nxumalo said they will discuss the xenophobic attacks that have rocked the country.

They will also discuss the increasing food prices largely affecting the poor.

Nxumalo clarified the issue of Bheki Cele who has been left out of the new proposed leadership.

Last year Cele was asked not to stand for any of the top five ANC provincial leadership positions ahead of the party's elective provincial executive committee meeting at the end of this month and he agreed.

"Cele was not pushed out, but as an NEC member he should concentrate on that position," said Nxumalo.

John Mchunu is standing as chairman and no one was contesting the position.
