About 300 unionists face axe

The "axe" might fall on 300 Greater Kokstad municipality employees who participated in an "illegal strike".

Members of the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) protested against "certain corrupt municipal managers and councillors".

They also accused certain councillors of "neglecting the needs of workers and reckless driving that ... cost the municipality dearly in car repairs and write-offs".

Now about 300 workers will face disciplinary hearings on the matter.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi confirmed the pending hearings.

"I have written letters to each of them communicating our intention to suspend them with immediate effect." he said.

The letters order every employee who went on strike to give reasons for taking part in an illegal strike.

Failure to do so within five days will result in a disciplinary hearing in which those involved will be charged for misconduct and putting the municipality into disrepute.

Union chairman Michael Makhopane refused to comment.
