Cellphone network company MTN has warned of a scam in which subscribers are robbed of money in a fake car competition.

MTN spokesman Ntombi Mhangwani say the company has already sent SMSs to its subscribers, warning them of the scam.

"These people send an SMS or call the subscribers to inform them that they have won a VW Polo," Mhangwani says.

She says the thugs ask for personal information and then advise the subscriber to deposit R800 into a particular account for the car to be registered.

"As soon as the subscriber deposits the money the criminals disappear"

Mhagwani says after the SMS was sent to subscribers sending no further instances of the scam were reported.

"We urge people to be careful and not give out their personal details," she says,
