The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is faced with a king-size headache as they try to solve a contract issue of players whose teams have qualified for the National First Division (NFD) playoffs.
The contracts of most of these players expire at the end of next month and there is a possibility that the playoffs may not have kicked off by next month.
Maritzburg United, Bay United, FC AK and Dynamos have qualified for the promotion-relegation event.
FC AK's future in the playoffs is uncertain, though, after Safa's appeals board threw out their appeal against their corruption and bribery charges on Tuesday night. They were found guilty of attempting to bribe an opposition goalkeeper.
Bahumi, who have until 10pm tomorrow to seek arbitration, are keen to exploit all possible avenues to prove that they are clean.
Bahumi are still in the NFD after Safa's appeals board decided to deduct 15 points as part of the punishment.
They are now seventh on the eight-team inland stream log on 21 points, above the relegated GaRankuwa United who finished at the bottom, also with 21 points.
Zola Majavu, PSL lawyer, said The Dynamites have about 42 players whose contracts expire at the end of June and that Bay United have 19, Maritzburg United 13 and FC AK 12.
Though there will be a further delay because of the pending arbitration, Majavu said they were happy that the appeal stage has been past.
Dan Leboa, acting PSL general manager, told stunned journalists at the same briefing that there would be a Top 8 competition that kicks off on August 9 and 10 next season.
Approached to clear the air later in the day, PSL chief executive Kjetil Siem said the Top 8 tournament, which does not have a sponsor as yet will be played in the 2008-2009 season.
He said the event would be suspended in 2009-2010 because of the World Cup.
"We are currently in negotiations with SAA and other companies in view of securing one to back the competition," Siem said.
