Tampering with video footage of the R46 million robbery at First National Bank would be impossible, the Johannesburg high court heard yesterday.
Surveillance expert Jacques Botha told the court the authenticity of the footage did not need to be questioned. He was testifying in a trial-within-a-trial to determine whether video footage should be admissible as evidence. The defence team has objected to the footage being viewed in court, saying there is no proof it had not been tempered with.
Elias Thutse, 34, Fabian Damons, 32, Daniel Mathaba, 42, Dick Ngobeni, 26, Jimmy Bilankulu, 37, Samson Mahlangu, 42, Vincent Xaba, 29, Themba Mahlangu, 40, and Simon Mncwango, 40, are on trial for armed robbery, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They have pleaded not guilty.
In February 2006, the men allegedly walked into First National Bank in the Johannesburg city centre disguised as Group Four Security personnel.
They robbed the bank of an estimated R46 million but were arrested before they could flee. The bank's security supervisor, Simon Mncwango, was also arrested
