"We are using the tournament to educate the residents of Soweto about the importance of the World Cup," said Phil "Chippa" Mogodi, Safa Soweto president.
"We started the 2008 edition of this development tournament with 122 clubs from throughout Soweto, but we are now left with 32.
"The draw for the next round will take place next Tuesday. We are using the same model used at the World Cup finals where 32 countries participate.
"The Local Organising Committee needs the support of all South Africans for the 2009 Confederations Cup and World Cup.
"Safa Soweto will be engaging the LOC to send some of the experts to talk to the players and officials about the World Cup and its spin-offs.
"It will also cover things like recruiting our players and officials as volunteers during the Confederations Cup and World Cup.
"We just felt we needed to do it through this tournament because Bra Stix was the first person who laid a foundation for South Africa's bid to host the World Cup."
The soccer challenge is the brainchild of Mogodi and it is in honour of Morewa, the former Safa executive president who died in 2005.
Mogodi, who is also the deputy of Safa Johannesburg region, said they will also use the tournament to educate Sowetans about the spirit of ubuntu.
"We need to stop the xenophobic attacks that have been engulfing various parts of South Africa. Those barbaric things are tarnishing the image of our country."
