Ekurhuleni executive mayor Duma Nkosi was not present to receive a workers' memorandum yesterday, which was just as well because one worker would have urinated on him.
Thousands of municipal workers gathered outside the council offices in Germiston to protest low salaries and other issues. They had expected Nkosi to receive a memorandum of grievances from their leaders but were left irritated when he did not turn up.
As they let rip with dance and song, Wessels Lesenyelo stripped and made it known he had intended to "urinate on the mayor".
Lesenyelo said: "I wanted to show him the angry face of a municipal worker."
Lesenyelo, who works in the parks division, produced his R3000 payslip and said the council's refusal to review his salary had stripped him of his dignity.
"I have two children I cannot look after, my dignity is long gone," he said.
About 100 police officers who were monitoring the strike ignored Lesenyelo as he walked around hurling insults at the absent Nkosi.
Another target of insults was Ekurhuleni Metro police chief Robert McBride.
Earlier, Metro police officers had charged at workers and threatened to arrest them. Workers stood their ground and challenged the police to arrest and shoot them. Before dispersing, workers vowed to return tomorrow to disrupt Nkosi's budget speech unless he acceded to their demands.
Workers are demanding the council pay them on the same grade as councillors and review their salaries. They also demand that members working under contractors be employed permanently by the council. They also want the commission to investigate Metro police chief McBride reinstated.
