An estimated 25000 Zimbabweans are heading for Zambia as they flee anti-immigrant violence in South Africa, with thousands of others leaving for Mozambique and Botswana, the Red Cross said yesterday.

"In Zambia our teams are expecting the arrival of 25000 Zimbabweans, or 5000 families," director for southern Africa Francoise Le Goff said yesterday.

"At least 5500 Zimbabweans have had assistance to Mozambique," she said. "Another 342 had been received in centres near the border with Botswana."

Authorities in Mozambique said about 26000 citizens had returned home since May 11.
