Firms thanked for aid to arts
Companies that are committed to supporting the arts have been handsomely rewarded.
The awards, which were handed out yesterday, are in recognition of the financial support and other assistance the corporate world has rendered to the arts.
The event was hosted by Anglo American at the Johannesburg Park Station.
The awards and winners in the different categories are:
Best use of a Commission of New Art category, which recognises sponsors with the vision to support the creation of new, original work in any arts medium and to use the commission effectively, the award went to Sandton central management district for the Sandton central illumination project, The Why Men.
The First Time Sponsor award: Tsogo Sun for II Teatro and South Africa's premiere of The Lion King;.
Access to the Arts Award: Exclusive Books for their book promotion programme Homebru;
The International Sponsorship award: Telkom SA for sponsoring The Lion King.
Term Development category award: Standard Bank for the Standard Bank African Art Collection at the University of Witwatersrand;
The Media Sponsorship category: Talk Radio 702 for sponsoring Africa Remix;
Single Project category award: Rand Merchant Bank for TheMagic Flute;
Small Business award: Coal Stove Productions for Off the Shelf, while the Sponsorship in Kind was won by Primi World for Primi Live;
The Strategic Sponsorship category award: Cell C for the Cell C Gospel Festival.
Youth Sponsorship category winner: TBWA-Hunt-Lascaris for Room 13.
The Barloworld Artworks Mentor of the Year Award, launched in 2005 with support from Barloworld, gave two awards - Gillian Crawford mentoring Kim Berman-Cara Walters at Artist Proof Studio and Gail Lemmert mentoring Joyce Levinsohn at the National Children's Theatre.
The Chairman's Premier Award is made at the discretion of the chairman of Business & Arts South Africa, and recognises sustained and extraordinary commitment to the arts in the country.
The award went to Nando's South Africa, a company that has increasingly, through innovative and effective investment in the arts, created a legacy beyond shareholder returns.
