Back to the streets

At least our elected leaders now recognise that we are at war with ourselves. But these imperious politicians are still trying to control matters from their distant offices.

Bad move.

The ugly face of xenophobia is seen on the streets of the poorest communities in the country. And that's where the battle must be fought.

Too bad if an overinflated ego or two is pricked by the jeers of a frustrated crowd baying for services long promised but never delivered.

Too bad if an official brought low at Polokwane must appear on the same platform as a Zumaite to be heard.

This is no time for sensitive egos to get in the way of coping with a national disaster. All the dreams of an African renaissance and Rainbow Nation are at risk.

Our regional and international reputation has been shot to shreds by a bunch of hooligans rampaging along the dusty roads of our least-privileged areas.

The struggle years taught us that is where true leaders must take up the cudgels for our nascent democracy.

Shocked citizens have been pouring into the streets to express their disgust and offer what comfort they can.

But where are our leaders?

The damage has been done - now we can only hope to patch up the dream.

It's time to roll up your Gucci sleeves, good people, and return to your roots.

A luta continua.
