Gospel legend Vuyo Mokoena, who died on Friday of a brain tumour, was an "ambassador of God".

Mokoena died at his home in Sonneveld, Johannesburg. He began experiencing health problems in February and was admitted to the Linksfield Clinic.

Many musicians and producers who worked with Mokoena have praised him for his ability to change people's lives through his music.

Deborah Fraser, one of South Africa's top selling artists, said: "To say Vuyo was talented is an understatement. He was an exceptionally talented composer and singer.

"I have done a few collaborations with him. What I noticed was that he was versatile and professional."

Distinguished music producer, Tshepo Nzimande, said the music industry would never find a replacement for him.

"I met him in Lesotho when he was a member of a group called Melodies. I persuaded him to join Pure Magic. He was more than a brother to me. I taught him to drive and we encouraged each other to go to gym."

Shobeni Khuzwayo, producer of female maskandi group Izingane Zoma, said: "I always thought Vuyo was one of those people who think they are 'it'. When I met him it turned out I was wrong. He was a humble man."

Gospel singer Lundi Tyamara said: "Mokoena might be gone but his music lives on. He wrote some good songs for me. I have always regarded him as a legend of gospel music."
