MADRID - Spanish coastguard boats yesterday rescued 67 would-be immigrants, and recovered two corpses near the Canary Islands.

The immigrants were in a poor physical state and three were taken to hospital with hypothermia, a Red Cross spokesman told state radio.

Thousands of illegal immigrants attempt the journey every year in wooden boats from Africa to Spain's Canary Islands - hundreds of miles off the African coast.

Many die trying to reach Europe in search of work. - Reuters
