A taxi passenger who assaulted a young woman after saying that "women talk too much" has been sentenced to four months in jail, suspended for five years.

Melusi Madida, 25, was given the option of a R1500 fine by the Hillbrow magistrate's court yesterday.

He was convicted of assaulting Precious Tshishonga, 25. Charges of assault against taxi driver Mfoliki Nkomo were withdrawn yesterday.

Tshishonga had boarded a taxi at the Noord Street rank. Nkomo was driving and Madida was a passenger. She paid with a R50 note and was given R39,50 in loose change. She asked why all her change was in coins and not notes. Nkomo became angry and Madida assaulted her. - Zinhle Mapumulo
