Department spokesman Zolisa Sigabi said in a statement yesterday that 47 companies had been charged with "deliberately flouting the law that prescribes a minimum wage in the sector, and ordered to pay the outstanding wages".
The firms had short-changed their employees by R1,37 million in wages.
"Topping the list of violators for nonpayment of leave and bonuses is Isidingo Security, which owes its employees more than R409000, followed by Noluvo Security, which owes R306309, while Indlondlo Security has defaulted by R248 755," she said.
The Durban Labour Centre's security sector task team had resolved almost 62percent of the 2432 complaints lodged since last October for underpayment of wages, nonpayment of leave pay, bonuses, Sunday work, public holidays and illegal deductions for uniforms. - Sapa-AP
