A piece of a rapist's tongue, which was bitten off by his victim, has been sent to Pretoria for forensic tests.

Barberton, Mpumalanga, police say they hope to arrest the culprit after the tests, which would be linked with the culprit's fingerprints.

The tests will be conducted after a local woman who was being raped severed a piece of her attacker's tongue after she initially pretended to be cooperating with the rapist.

The woman bit his tongue so badly that a piece remained in her mouth.

The incident happened at Extension 9 in Barberton on Wednesday night.

Police spokesman Jabu Ndubane said the 34-year-old woman, who was returning from a night vigil at about 8pm, was attacked by the man when she walked past a deserted area.

After his tongue was bitten off the man fled and the woman went to a local clinic the following day for treatment.
