Media deserve pat on back

Mass media, especially newspapers, radio and television, are very powerful instruments of communication.

The influence they wield gives journalists and media owners great power in society.

This is also true of talk-show hosts and radio disc jockeys who are wont to dabble in journalism or express their opinion.

It is for this reason that the press and broadcasters have codes that regulate their conduct and the practice of their craft.

While they fiercely defend freedom of speech and press freedom, good journalists and media organisations also take care not to exercise their power recklessly.

Thankfully, South Africa is blessed with an abundance of ethical journalists and media that stand up to scrutiny.

Our media have, once again, been placed in the spotlight for the way they report on the ongoing xenophobic violence.

It is pleasing to say that, on the whole, our media deserve kudos for the professional way in which they have covered the unfolding human catastrophe.

Only one xenophobic, down-market national daily panders to the blood-thirsty mobs that are hellbent on cleansing the country of the "The Alien Terror".

Sowetan would like to be counted among the media that refuse to play to the xenophobic gallery.

Besides, where others see aliens, we see fellow Africans, our own flesh and blood.
